Star appeal
TELEVISION TENDS to create larger than life characters, who become an inseparable part of an actor’s identity even if the series in question is short-lived.
A classic example of this phenomenon is Barun Sobti, whose career took off when he starred as the arrogant yet charming Arnav Singh Raizada in Star TV’s Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon, an extremely popular show that catapulted him to superstardom and was reportedly discontinued when he quit.
UAE fans will no doubt be pleased to know that Sobti can be seen in a new play, Do Fool Chaar Maali, to be performed in Dubai on Saturday, April 20, at Sheikh Rashid Auditorium, The Indian High School.
Despite having left Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon, his connection with the show continues, as the play itself was the outcome of an idea that bore fruit on set, according to www.tellychakkar.com, and features cast members Akshay Dogra, Utkarsha Naik, Deepali Pansare and Pyumori Mehta.
Do Fool Chaar Maali is a comedy that revolves around two quarrelling spinsters who thwart the attempts of two ‘desi boys’ to con two young girls in Dubai .
In a chat prior to his Dubai visit, Sobti told City Times what attracted him to the play was “the cast, as they’re my friends.” Surprisingly, he did not reveal anything about his role though we hear that he is the narrator. He also denied that theatre is something he is actively pursuing. “We feel good about bringing this play to Dubai and we expect people to take away smiles,” he said.
Sobti admitted that people tend to confuse him with the character he played on the show but is not bothered by it.
“I am recognised as Arnav; I’m not trying to break away from that image.”
The actor has made a recent foray into Bollywood and said acting was always on the cards for him.
“I’ve never had time to plan things but somewhere deep down I wanted to act, the urge was never as strong as it is now. If I wasn’t an actor, I’d be working in a call center or I’d be a football coach.”
His first film is called Main aur Mr. Right and he hopes “people like it.”
A fan of Ranbir Kapoor, Sobti cites Barfi! as one of his favourite contemporary films.
When asked if he faced any struggles during the early stages of his career, he said, “With the kind generosity God’s shown to me, I don’t think I should be complaining. And for people who wish to become actors, I’ll say this: if I can be where I am, then anyone can be.
Pehla Media & Entertainent (PME) has lined up a surprise star home visit for Pehla audiences in the UAE - Barun Sobti will drop in to the selected home and share a cup of tea with the family on April 21 while another lucky viewer gets a dream date with one of the Iss Pyar Kya Naam Doon star cast, who are being flown down for the play Do Fool Chaar Maali. Pehla has also given away tickets to some lucky subscribers, a few of whom will get to interact with the cast after the play.

Exclusive: Barun Sobti Reads Out Fan Tweets!
I gotta tell you guys, ever since we announced that we’d be interviewing Barun Sobti, our collective Twitter timelines have been going nuts with Sobtians tweeting in questions and messages for Barun! Several of you sent in questions (and we asked some of them), but many of you also just wanted to tell Barun how much you love him. So we took a few messages from Twitter and the comments of our blog, and gave Barun to read them out and respond! Have a look; you’ll love it :)
Team MM: Prav wrote a comment saying, “In one of his
interviews I remember he said that he doesn’t believe in fandom cos once
his show IPKKND would be over all the fans will forget him. So here we
are today truly madly and deeply crazy about him.” So your fanbase is still alive and kicking. Any messages for these fans?
Barun: I’m pleasantly surprised, actually. It’s a known fact that
when you’re out of sight, you’re out of mind. But people have made a
very deliberate effort to keep me in contention. I did an interview with
a journalist called Stuti in Kolkata and she called me back saying what
crazy fandom I have. She said she’s interviewed a lot of poeple but
hasn’t seen anything like this. So at that time I was thinking, these
people really have lived up to their word and they really do like things
the way I’ve done them. I think people kind of relate to me because I’m
a simple guy like these people are. So I just want to thank them and
just hope I live up to your expectations and do things you like.
Team MM: What’s the craziest thing a fan has done for you?
Different things. A lotta people wanna hug you… it’s happened a lot
lately, people who have seen me on the road lately have asked “Can I hug
you? And kiss you?” That’s a little awkward when you’re with your wife.
They’ll ask you to say dialogues and stuff. But it’s all taken good
spirit and it’s nice, they’re all dignified people.
Interesting that he mentions hugging since so many of you asked us to pass on hugs to Barun! :) So of course we did – our feisty photographer Khyati Gandhi stepped out from behind the camera to give Barun that hug on your behalf. Yup, it’s a tough job, working with MissMalini. ;)
WIN: An Autographed Photo from Barun Sobti!
Alright Sobtians, here’s what you’ve all been waiting for! We’re giving you a chance to win one of these awesome, autographed photos by Barun Sobti himself!
All you have to do is watch the video and answer his question, and you
stand a chance to take home one of his handwritten messages – though
Barun claims that his handwriting is so bad, his friends tend to joke
that he’s “footwriting” :)
Q: Guess what Barun’s character is like in Main Aur Mr Right. Please post your answer in the comments below (also specify your city).
He does tell us a little bit about it in the interview we did with him, so try to put together the pieces and you never know, if we like your answer, we’ll send one of these your way! See, he signed them himself:via http://www.missmalini.com/2013/04/19/win-an-autographed-photo-from-barun-sobti/

I am a very simple guy: Barun Sobti
The Indian TV actor is coming to Dubai on Saturday.
This Saturday, Barun Sobti, a popular star from the Indian TV industry, will take the stage for the first time in the role of the narrator of the play Do Fool Char Maali, at Shaikh Rashid Auditorium, The Indian High School Dubai.
Sobti, who gained popularity as Arnav Singh Raizada of Star Plus’ hit show Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon (IPKKND), however, feels the stage is not the place for him.
“Not once in my life have I done theatre. Being on stage is not my thing,” said the 28-year-old actor. “This show happened when we were shooting for IPKKND. It was Akshay’s [Dogra] idea actually and Utkarshaji’s [Naik, Sobti’s co-stars in the serial]. They started talking about it and everyone there made a commitment. And, because I was there, I committed too”.
Today, Sobti is moving on to bigger and better things — the 70mm kinds. Though his first movie as a lead, Main Aur Mr Right, which was slated for release at the end of the month, has been postponed for a July release, he is already working on the second, 22 Yards. However, the actor feels there’s no difference working on television or on the big screen.
“For me the only difference is I get to be home a lot more. With TV I had to work everyday. Now, I’m not enormously busy, and have been picking and choosing whatever I’m doing. As an actor, I think the experience and the portrayal of the character is exactly the same. It doesn’t make any difference what camera is capturing it. You have to do it with the same passion”.
When in Dubai, Sobti will also be paying a surprise visit to a Pehla subscriber. His popularity can easily be gauged from the way his fans reacted when he announced his departure from IPKKND, which actually led to the ending of the show. Despite controversial reports of fans threatening self immolation and subsequent statements from the channel, producers and the actors of the show, Sobti maintains the only reason he wanted to leave was his health.
“I am a very simple guy. Of course popularity matters a lot but for me my health and family come first,” explains Sobti. “I had been spending a lot of time working and needed to spend some time at home and take care of my health. That’s the only reason why I left the show despite it being so popular.”
Or could it be the alleged roaring off-screen chemistry he shared with his co-star Sanaya Irani? Or was that a publicity stunt on the part of the show’s producers?
“One cannot forget that showbusiness also deals with humans. Everything is not so superficial that this is rigged or planned. Sometimes people do fall in love with each other because they spend a lot of time on the sets so much so the set becomes your first home and your actual home becomes your second home. But I don’t disagree, though it hasn’t happened to me [producers using on screen chemistry as a publicity stunt] people may do this for publicity also.
“See what happens — and I know I’ve been saying it in all my interviews so I’d probably be boring my viewers now — is you lose perspective if you’re working so hard every day. You can’t think straight, you can’t do new things. Basically the monotony hit me. That’s it”.
Sobti, who has played both negative and positive roles on television, finds the villain attractive.
“A role being meaty depends on how it’s written. Playing a villain in Dill Mill Gayye, I learned you can do whatever you want and the director’s more than happy to accommodate. But with the hero’s or the positive role come a lot of limitations. The hero won’t behave like this; the hero won’t sneeze like that — stuff of that sort. In our industry the men or boy actors have to be ‘hero-types’, if you know what I mean. They can’t be human beings. Where I am in life right now I just want to do good scripts and roles”.

Exclusive: Barun Sobti Speaks About His Upcoming Films!
Here’s good news for everyone who loved watching Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon and misses Barun Sobti on-screen: he’s already finished shooting for his debut Bollywood flick (Main Aur Mr Right), and has begun pre-production work on his second film, 22 Yards. We know you guys love him (if the comments on this post
were any indication!), so when he popped into our office today for an
interview, we asked him all about his films, his upcoming play in Dubai,
and whether he has any plans on returning to television. Check out our
exclusive interview with the man himself!
Team MissMalini (Team MM): Tell us about your film, Main Aur Mr Right.
Barun Sobti (BS): It’s a romcom, it’s a simple film. There’s no
path-breaking cinema. It’s a very light film, actually, people who are
looking for a lighter dose of romance and comedy should go in. I think
it’s going to have a lot of youth audience and I’m playing the character
of Sukhi, a wannabe model/actor… [mumbles] like in real life. And yeah,
that’s about it.
Team MM: When is it releasing?
BS: I’d like to know. [smiles] No, I know. It’s going towards the mid of July.
Team MM: Tell us about 22 Yards and your character, Ron Sen.
BS: Ron Sen is actually short for Ronajit Sen. I’m playing a cricket agent in 22 Yards,
and a lot of people – including me – are not aware that cricket
actually has agents. So everything from what product is going to be
endorsed on a cricketer’s bat/jersey, and what player is going to be
playing for club, and what endorsement is going to come out on the
field, is all figured out by a cricket agent. I’m playing one of those.
There’s me and another character, we’re going to be the two lead actors.
There are a lot of other substantial characters as well. It’s a nice
script, going by the fact that everyone the makers have approached and
shared the script with have gotten onboard. That goes to say how good
the script is.
Team MM: You’ve completed the second round of workshops for 22 Yards, right?
BS: We’ve been working quite a lot on the film, because originally it
was written in English. So to translate it into Hindi with the same
kind of weight and effect becomes a little difficult. So we spent a lot
of time translating into… not completely Hindi, that didn’t happen, but
Hinglish. That took a lot of time, but I think we’ve done a fair job and
we pretty much have exactly the script we’re going to use in the film.
Team MM: Is this your look in the film?
BS: One of them. This is my look when I’m not really working a lot
[laughs] I don’t like to shave or trim. But this is luckily going to be
one of the looks in the film.
Team MM: How similar are the MAMR and 22 Yards characters to you?
BS: So the character in MAMR is a very righteous kind of a guy. He’ll
be like, if he sees someone crossing the road and having difficulty, or
someone’s car breaks down and you need someone to push, or offering a
woman seat… he’d do that. So would I. But Ron (22 yards) is a
very intense, broody sort of a guy. I sometimes get like that, but
otherwise I’m a pretty chilled out, easy-going sort of a guy.
Team MM: You’re going to be in a play with some of the other cast members of Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Do in Dubai soon. Tell us a little about that – have you been to Dubai before?
BS: I’ve never been to Dubai. Actually the only travelling out of the
country I’ve done in my life has been in the last 6 months, because I
was always working. So this is going to be the first time in Dubai, and
this play… one of my friends Akshay, we were shooting for Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Do one
day and we were just discussing this play’s subject. While we were in
conversation about doing something of this sort, everyone got to
a consensus and said “you’ll do it.” So I gave my word; that’s the sole
reason I’m doing it. I’m not really a stage person, and I think this is
probably going to be the last time I’ll do something on stage.
Team MM: Which is more difficult: TV or film acting?
BS: No no, characters are difficult to play. Facing the camera is
exactly the same. I mean it’s different for the director of photography,
the director, for the cast/continuity team… but for an actor it’s
exactly the same.
Team MM: Which Bollywood actor/actress would you like to work with?
BS: I have no idea. I’m not the kind of person who’d look at a
production house, or the cast, or the director, or a banner to say yes
to a project. I would just simply look at the script and my character.
Team MM: Any plans to return to television?
BS: Plans, I don’t make any plans. If they don’t work out, what’s the point? I don’t know, I just take life as it comes.
Team MM: How do you stay grounded despite the success you’ve received?
BS: [embarrassed] People really think a lot of me, actually. There’s
not much I’ve done in my life. And I don’t know… you are what the people
around you make you. I think the people around me and my family give me
a reality check every now and then. See, the good thing is, my folks,
my family, my wife, they are proud of me in the right way, you know.
They’d be proud, but they wouldn’t go out showing off. They’d just be
content and happy and shower their love on me. So they take it pretty
well, and I’m actually proud of the way they take it.
Team MM: Any plans to join Twitter? You have a lot of fans!
BS: I’m really bad with social networking sites. I won’t be able to
justify it. I don’t want to be answering a couple of questions and being
lazy for the rest of the life and people blaming me. So I’d rather not
do that. When cellphones came out, it took me a little while to get used
to them as well. So I’m the kind of person who’d rather talk in-person.

Hottie of the Week: Barun Sobti!
It’s a clear indication of Barun Sobti‘s popularity that I, having never seen any of his shows, still know exactly who he is – perhaps because .gifs of Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon were
abundant on Tumblr, or maybe because my Twitter timeline tends to get
filled with tweets from Sobtians (as his fans are known). In any case,
when we saw these shots of him, we knew we had to make him our Hottie of
the Week!
Barun is perhaps best known for Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, his STAR Plus serial where he played business tycoon Arnav Singh Raizada.
When he left the show last year due to health reasons, it was the first
time in Indian television history that a show shut down because the
actor quit. Since then, Barun has signed two Bollywood films – Main Aur Mr Right (opposite Shenaz Treasurywala), which he’s already completed shooting for; and 22 Yards, which is in pre-production.
