Barun Sobti, the tall, fair and handsome guy of STAR Plus’s now off-air Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, was recently in town for his second film (tentatively titled 22 Yards — yes, it’s on cricket) that will be directed by Mitali Ghoshal, who had earlier made the documentary The Warrior Prince on Sourav Ganguly. A quick chat with Barun...
This is your first time in Calcutta. What’s your impression of our city?
Yellow cabs... trams... and I had no idea it was going to be so cold here! Also, I have heard that the people of Calcutta are very good and so far I have met good people!
Tell us about your role in your first film Main Aur Mr Right, set to release this year.
I play a total wannabe in the movie. Shenaz Treasury is looking for Mr Right and my character is far from it.
Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon went off air when you, as Arnav, walked out of the show. How much of Barun is Arnav?
I am quite unlike Arnav. Arnav had a lot of emotional baggage... but bad things happen to everyone. Even I had a bumpy ride in life but then I never took it negatively. Barun and Arnav are similar in their high regard for family.
TV or films, which is priority?
It doesn’t matter for an actor. An actor has to act irrespective of the camera or location. In both the cases, we are given a script and we are supposed to give our best and act.
What kind of roles are you looking for in Bollywood?
I am not Shah Rukh Khan! But I am open to good scripts with good roles.
QUICK-FIRE
A recent favourite film: Table No. 21.
Favourite actor: Paresh Rawal for sure.
Favourite actress: I really liked Priyanka Chopra in Barfi!
You look best in: Casuals. Say, a shirt with denims!
The Most romantic thing you have done: (Smiles) This is so private... I have done so many romantic things for my wife (Pashmeen), yaar.
Your sex appeal lies in: I don’t know... how do I say this? Women should be able to answer it better!
The hottest Bolly heroine: I was watching Heroine and I really liked Kareena Kapoor a lot!
